ODOT says budget woes will slow response to snowstorms across Oregon
2 min read
Oregon transportation agencies are warning Oregonians that if the state gets slammed with snow, they’re going to have a hard time responding. The reason? Budget cuts.
"We’re expecting staffing shortages this winter due to a variety of reasons," Geoff Bowyer, Emergency Operations Manager at Oregon Department of Transportation, said during an annual winter preparedness news conference. "If you’re traveling, know that your trip may take longer. Carry emergency supplies like food, water, batteries, flashlights, blankets."
Bowyer said during the news conference ODOT will not be filling 25 positions in maintenance and operations, and says he’s still working to fill positions that are open.
"During winter storms, crews from PBOT and our regional partners work night and day, in challenging conditions, to make our routes passable for the traveling public. When it snows, we also need the public’s help. Make a plan today for how you and your family can stay off the roads and give our crews the space they need to make our snow and ice routes passable," Public Works Deputy City Administrator Dhanapal said. "We need to work together and help each other. One of the best things you can do to help your neighbors is to be ready to clear your sidewalk. Your neighbors need your sidewalk to be passable in the snow, so they can take public transit instead of driving."
If you’re traveling this winter, know your trip may take longer.
Have important things with you like chains, and emergency kits in case you get stranded.
