Oregon lawmakers approve more than $218M to pay wildfire bills during special session

2 min read

The Oregon Legislature passed a bill Thursday during a special legislative session to allocate more than $218 million in funding for the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office to help those agencies pay vendors used during the state’s historic wildfire season this year and to keep those agencies solvent.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek called the special session at the end of November. She asked lawmakers to approve $218 million for the agencies.

Most lawmakers were on board with moving the money forward and paying the vendors that helped with firefighting efforts. But some lawmakers, like Sen. Lynn Findley, R-Vale, expressed frustration that the budget deficit was not addressed sooner.
