Portland man says he’s struggling with housing hurdles because he’s sober

Naresh Mall lives at the Peninsula Crossing Safe Rest Village.
He ended up there in February after he lost his job as an assistant manager at another hotel. He says he’d worked there for three years, and that gig came with housing, but when they shut down for renovations, he had to move out. Mall had some money saved up, but says it wasn’t enough for an apartment.
After living in a tent, and then navigating various social service programs in Portland, Mall decided the Safe Rest Village was the best stepping stone to a more permanent place to live. But weeks after he moved in, he says it was clear he might be stuck there. That’s when he reached out to KATU News.
