13-year-old arrested in sex abuse investigation at Jewell School east of Seaside

Sheriff’s deputies took a 13-year-old student at Jewell School east of Seaside into custody last week after responding to a complaint of sex abuse involving two students, according to the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies took the 13-year-old to a youth detention facility and the case has been referred to the Clatsop County Juvenile Department and the district attorney’s office.

Deputies responded to the school on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The sheriff’s office released no other details.

Several parents of the very small, rural community told KATU they have complained to the district about the student multiple times without repercussions.

One parent, who did not want to be identified, expressed disappointment with the district.

“I have filed multiple sexual harassment claims against the student. I have had to keep my child home from school on multiple occasions because she didn’t feel safe. I have reached out to the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Education, DHS, the parents of the individual himself as well,” she said.

In a statement, Jewell School District Interim Superintendent Cory Pederson said student safety and well-being was the district’s top priority.

“While we cannot disclose specific details regarding this incident due to privacy concerns, please be assured that we are addressing the matter in line with our district’s policies and procedures to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students,” Pederson said.

The sheriff’s office said it is still investigating.
