Oregon federal judge halts Kroger, Albertsons merger

An Oregon federal judge on Tuesday approved a preliminary injunction that pauses the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons, putting the would-be largest grocery merger in U.S. history in question.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit in February to prevent the $24.6 billion deal from moving forward, alleging it would eliminate competition and raise grocery prices.

Judge Adrienne Nelson said the preliminary injunction "simply pauses the merger," and leaves its fate to ongoing, internal FTC administrative hearings.
