Over 1,000 trees to be planted in East Portland to combat heat vulnerability

Portland Parks & Recreation’s program will plant Free Street Trees in neighborhoods in Portland that are in need for more tree canopy.

This winter over 1,000 trees will be planted in many neighborhoods including Buckman, Kerns, and South Tabor.

According to PP&R, the tree plantings are targeted for locations where the deficit of tree cover has left communities most vulnerable to heat illness.

Looking at the data, locations west of the Willamette River, there is over 50% of tree coverage. East of the river, where most Portlanders live, there is only 21%. That leaves most Portlanders very vulnerable to heat illness.

PP&R says this could mean life or death for residents. “Everyone, regardless of where we live, deserves safer, cleaner, healthier neighborhoods,” says PP&R Director Adena Long. “It’s a matter of public well-being. The Free Street Tree program is a step in the right direction.”

While the free tree program is targeted for city property, they are also offering trees to private properties.

Free trees available for private properties are through the Yard Tree Giveaway program.

300 trees are still available for delivery to Portlanders, the deadline to register is December 13, 2024.
