Oregon officials urge tsunami preparedness after brief warning

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (ODEM) is urging tsunami preparedness after Thursday’s earthquake.
According to ODEM, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred at 11:44 a.m. PST offshore 56 miles east of Petrolia, California.
“We had folks from northern California and southern Oregon issuing evacuation orders and getting people to higher ground in case a tsunami was going to be generated,” said Althea Rizzo, the geologic hazards program coordinator at the Oregon Department of Emergency Management.
“You know, we were very lucky today. In that, today’s tsunami was not generated from the Cascadia subduction zone, but we do get tsunami events, fairly frequently.”
