Upstate New York residents begin digging out from feet of lake effect snow

Across the northern part of New York, residents were continuously hit with snow over the Thanksgiving weekend and the Great Lakes region is expected to face the prospect of even more this week.

Lake-effect snow warnings were in effect through Tuesday night in parts of Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania while nearly 4 feet fell in upstate New York and parts of Pennsylvania and Michigan.

A blast of Arctic air last week brought bitter temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 12 to minus 6 Celsius) below average to the northern Plains, the weather service said.

As the snowflakes came piling down in Jefferson County, New York, neighbors like Michael Kanealy knew what had to be done — start taking out those shovels and clear their driveways or call someone to help them out.

"It’s been actually pretty crazy. We’ve gone a couple of years without a big storm like this, and it has been nonstop since the day after Thanksgiving. It comes in waves, all different kinds of snow, the heavy wet stuff and the pellets.

In Adams Center, no matter how much they shovel or blow the snow away, it just keeps coming back.

Allen Barney said he has to keep restarting the process over again snow plowing.

“Since it is so wet and heavy, the tires just want to spin, so you lose a lot of traction. We’ve had to use the bucket with the tractor in it to remove snow.”
