St. Helens High principal indicted on felony criminal mistreatment charges

At least some St. Helens School District parents are happy to hear that the principal of St. Helens High School, Katy Wagner, has been indicted on felony charges of criminal mistreatment by a Columbia County grand jury, accusing her of failing to protect students from two teachers who have been arrested for sexually abusing students.
According to a court document filed Tuesday, the grand jury indicted Wagner on two counts of felony first-degree criminal mistreatment, two counts of first-degree official misconduct, misdemeanors, and two counts of second-degree official misconduct, also misdemeanors.
The accusations in the court document against Wagner stem from choir teacher, 46-year-old Eric Stearns, and former teacher, 64-year-old Mark Collins, being arrested two weeks ago and accused of sexually abusing students. Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Wagner, as well as the superintendent, were placed on administrative leave on Friday, Nov. 15.
According to court documents, Wagner is accused of knowingly withholding necessary and adequate physical care from students at the high school and not reporting child abuse.
