Peter Courtney, force for mental health care, honored in name at Oregon State Hospital

Peter Courtney died the same day a ceremony was planned in his honor to rename the Oregon State Hospital the Peter Courtney Salem Campus of the Oregon State Hospital on Tuesday.
Friends, family and colleagues gathered at the hospital hours after the announcement the 81-year-old former state lawmaker, Senate president and giant in Oregon politics died from complications of cancer.
They were there to honor Courtney’s commitment to improve mental health care as well as his discovery at the Oregon State Hospital the unclaimed cremated remains of nearly 3,500 Oregonians who had died at the hospital and other state institutions. More than 1,250 of those remains have been reunited with their families.
