‘Bomb Cyclone’ Wind and rain batter Pacific Northwest; Reporter loses her hat during live shot

2 min read

"Wind is already beginning to pick up along near the Gorge at Troutdale, along the coast and upper elevations," Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby said. "I expect it to turn into a breezy afternoon, then turn windy near evening."

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the Willamette Valley beginning at 1 p.m. until 4 a.m. Wednesday.

“South to southeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected,” NWS Portland said in the advisory message.

On the coastline, a High Wind Warning will go into effect at 1 p.m. South winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” NWS Portland said.

"At frontal passage later tonight, there will be a period when wind, rain and mountain snow will be pretty heavy and settle down into scattered showers by morning," Shelby added.

Snow in the mountains will increase this afternoon and evening, bringing another 3 to 6 inches at pass level early in the day, with up to 12 inches of fresh snow by Wednesday morning. Winds are expected to be gusting as high as 55 mph.

"Travel in the Cascades will remain challenging tonight above 4000 feet due to new accumulating snow, 6 inches likely, up to a foot closer to the ski resorts," Shelby said.

Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Dave Salesky will have the latest conditions and forecast at KATU News at 4, 5, 6, and 11 p.m.

Many meteorologists have identified this area of low pressure as a ‘bomb cyclone’ meaning it will strengthen 24 millibars (units of pressure) in a 24 hour period.

This is not a new phenomenon, it occurs frequently around the world, over the oceans and land.
