St. Helens High School students return with support systems amid sex abuse arrests

On Tuesday, St. Helens High School classes are back in session, after a three-day school closure following the arrest of one teacher and one former teacher on charges that include sexual abuse of students.
Members of the community told us instead of class on Monday, there was a workday for staff to learn about how to properly handle allegations of sexual abuse.
After the St. Helens acting police chief revealed that the district hadn’t reported complaints for years, parents were enraged, and wanted to see change.
Hordes of students have been protesting the St. Helens School District’s handling of the choir teacher who was allowed to keep teaching despite of being investigated by police for allegedly sexually abusing students.
“I want to not have to worry about, you know, how is today gonna go? Am I going to be touched?” said Jaidynn White, an 11th grader at St. Helens High School.
“We aren’t done. This is not over,” said Avlene Moore, the ASB philanthropy coordinator. “So the discussion was basically getting students back into school and back into classes. But really, their wanting to see is just that slow transition so students aren’t getting re-traumatized again.”
