Culinary icon Naomi Pomeroy drowns while tubing Willamette River

Naomi Pomeroy, an acclaimed Portland chef/restauranteur and James Beard Award winner, lost her life on Saturday in an inner tubing accident on the Willamette River.
Officials say she was floating the Willamette with her husband and another person when her tube hit a snag and plunged her into the water. She never resurfaced.
Rescuers found Pomeroy’s body underwater but were unable to recover it due to strong currents. Her remains floated downstream, and authorities continue to search for her.
Now, the Portland community is grieving her loss and remembering her prolific culinary legacy.
From opening the fine dining restaurant Beast to winning a James Beard Award, Pomeroy was constantly influencing the Portland and national dining scene.
Still, she was known for far more than just her food.
“Naomi was a co-founder of this independent restaurant coalition, which was a national organization that you know, fought for funds and other things for independent restaurants,” a restaurant critic said.
