Oregon group calculates economic impacts of climate change

A new economic group is tallying the costs of climate change in Oregon.

The group includes professors from Reed College and the University of Oregon and is focused on understanding and communicating research that has already been done.

They have looked at data from scientific journals as well as reports from the state of Oregon.

Keaton Miller, an associate professor at the University of Oregon, is a part of the group.

He says the goal is to sort through and process the information to find what’s most applicable to Oregon and that includes heat waves and wildfires.

They are also assessing sea level rise, death of Douglas firs in the state’s forests and air quality.

"It’s some of these other things that are less visible but still impactful. And I think a really great example of that is the cost of smoke. You know, some of it is direct. Some of it is buying, you know, air purifiers, which a lot of my friends have done. A lot of classrooms at the university that I work at now have, you know, air purifiers in them," Miller says.

There are other costs to think of as well. Miller says lost wages are one. That would include staying home from work because your kids can’t go to school from smoke or the smoke is making you sick.

Miller and the others in the group are trying to emphasize that the cost of climate change is complex.

They hope policymakers will use their breakdown when it comes to future investments.
