Portland Mayoral Race comes down to two candidates, Keith Wilson and Carmen Rubio

CEO of a trucking company, Keith Wilson, is leading in preliminary ranked choice voting results in the race for Portland mayor, according to unofficial results released by Multnomah County on Tuesday night.

In a single winner ranked choice contest, like this race, rounds of tabulation are conducted that eliminate candidates with the fewest votes. Votes from eliminated candidates are transferred to the voter’s next preference. Rounds continue until one candidate receives 50% +1.

Nearly 20 people ran for the mayor’s seat this year, and for the first time, Portland voters could rank their top six candidates by their preference.

With Tuesday night’s release of votes, Multnomah County ran 19 rounds until Wilson emerged with 63% of the vote. City Commissioner Carmen Rubio had 37%.

After the first vote tallies were released showing him leading, Wilson, at his campaign party at Old Town Brewing on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, said his campaign was hopeful he would prevail.

"This is all a new process for us, but the lead seems significant, and we’re confident in the effort we put forward. We hope it holds up," he said.

Earlier, while out on the street campaigning with his sign-wielding supporters, Wilson said he was feeling good about his chances of winning the race, saying if he wins, after a rest, he’s going to get to work.

"We’ve already created a roadmap for tomorrow. We already know what we’re going to do on those first few days, so we’re not going to wait, we’re going to celebrate in a very muted way because the hard work is ahead," he said.

Wilson has campaigned on tackling the homeless issue and getting people off the streets quickly.

In addition to being a CEO, he is the founder of a nonprofit, Shelter Portland.
