Portland rocked by deadly weekend: five killed in separate incidents across the city
3 min read
Portland police say five people were killed in four different areas of Portland last weekend.
Acting Deputy Chief Chris Gjovik says "It is a tremendous number and it’s not common. I can’t remember a weekend that was as violent as this weekend. As for themes these were spread all over the city, all different groups of communities."
The first was a shooting just after 11:15 Friday night. A man was found dead from a gunshot wound in Sellwood Riverfront Park.
On Saturday, two men were shot and killed near Broughton Beach just before 8 p.m.
Sunday night, a man was shot and killed in the Rose City Park Neighborhood, and early Monday morning, a man was stabbed to death in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood.
Police arrested a suspect for the stabbing incident, but no suspects are in custody in connection with the shootings.
PPB’s acting Deputy Chief Chris Gjovik, told KATU news how the bureau plans to respond to the spike in violence. "To respond the police bureau is going to increase patrols in public spaces and open areas and be highly visible in the next week," Gjovik said.
We dug into the data to see how the number of homicides so far this month compares to previous years.
In 2022, nine people were killed due to gun violence in July. Eight people were killed in July 2022, seven of these people died in shootings, and one person was stabbed to death.
We are at the halfway mark of July 2024 and there have been seven homicides. Six of those were shootings and one was a stabbing.
KATU spoke with criminologist Randall Blazak who says there is a normal increase of crime in the summer months.
"We generally see a spike in the summer, the spike this year has been relative to past years lower but, still elevated in the summer months. One of the problems is it’s getting hotter earlier in the year and the types of temps we see in June and July, we usually associate with August and September."
He goes on to say there might be more to come with agitated states people are in when it’s hot and when you mix that with alcohol and large gatherings outside.
