Police investigating racial slurs etched on the hood of a Portland resident’s car

Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating a bias crime after an African-American woman, LaQuida Landford, reported that racial slurs were etched into her car.

In her ten years of living in Northwest Portland, Landford has never experienced something like this.

“I noticed on the hood of my car there was a very like some, looked like scratching and so I looked closer and the message is something that I wouldn’t have thought that I would see,” said Landford. “It’s two racial slurs combined into one, that’s just unacceptable.”

She’s not sure how, if at all, the perpetrator knew she was African-American.

“It happened close to my home, so it’s just like it’s too close that someone like Michael Jackson, I just feel like someone is watching me,” said Landford.

She is an ardent advocate for people of color, though her car wasn’t even parked outside her non-profit organization when this happened.

“The only thing that was some type of identification of my car that said my car of the organization, but it had been sitting on my dashboard for months,” said Landford.

Landford is now concerned for her safety and the implications of what this says about society.

“It made me feel very disturbed because of the nature and the climate that we’re in right now, we’re just a couple of days, well now, we’re one day from the election and the message is not super positive,” said Landford.
