Man helps stop Vancouver Mall shooting victim from bleeding out

Kevyn Tomasini said he did what any parent would do if put in this situation, when shots rang out at Vancouver Mall, his instinct was to protect his children, but what he did next was beyond that.

“Once they were kind of covered, protected, I, you know, kind of barricaded the men’s safety, of course, I started to look around, make sure if anybody was okay, and that’s when i had to realize that we’re not very far from the deceased body,” said Tomasini. “When I was standing there, I look over and I actually happened to find Daniel sitting there, clinching onto his two kids with the bullet hole in his foot.”

Daniel Martin was shielding his own children, all while having a bullet lodged in his foot.

“The only thing I could find were some napkins on the counter, you know, so I grabbed some, grabbed as many napkins as I can and wad him up into a nice solid napkin, applied pressure on it, kept the pressure on it while the whole time he’s, the whole time he’s keeping the kids distracted and he did a very good job doing that too,” said Tomasini. “So that gave me a chance to do my thing, you know, wrap them up, ended up finding a belt, got a belt, tied it off, you know, and kept pressure on it, kept him okay for, you know, as long as I could until police and paramedics arrived.”

Martin is the one who told KATU about this heroic act, but he didn’t know who this man was.

“I don’t know who gave me their belt to use as a tourniquet but whoever did thank you for that,” said Martin.

Even though Tomasini and Martin were mere strangers, Tomasini knew this much about Martin. “You don’t deserve that to happen to you,” said Tomasini.
