‘Free Gaza’ written on incendiary devices that burned ballot boxes, ABC News confirms

Members of the Portland Metro community are unsure of what to believe after hearing that ABC News sources are claiming the incendiary devices put on ballot boxes in Oregon and Washington had “Free Gaza” and "Free Palestine" written on them.

The FBI and Portland Police Bureau are tight lipped about information pertaining to the device since it is an active investigation.

ABC News and the New York Times report the information was confirmed by sources familiar with the investigation.

"I’d like to know who did it but I don’t immediately associate that with the movement because anybody could write that,” said Derek Weaver, who has been tasked with keeping his eyes on the Fisher’s Landing ballot box since it was torched.

He’s not convinced this was done by someone in the Free Gaza movement.

"Even if it was, I’d say that they don’t represent the group as a whole… I doubt the vast majority support that in my opinion,” said Weaver.

We went to sociologist Dr. Randall Blazak, who studies political violence in the Pacific Northwest. He gave us some context about what was allegedly written on the devices.

“It is part of the rhetoric on both ends of the political spectrum, on the far ends of the political spectrum on the right, and the left, that the democratic process is fundamentally broken and [that] it cannot achieve the goals of the people,” said Dr. Blazak.

We asked Dr. Blazak if this was a red herring. "There’s a lot that we don’t know about it. And I think that should also be highlighted, there is an attempt to divide us on the extremes and make the other side look bad. So that’s often a play,” said Dr. Blazak. “I think it’s really important to get the word out. That these actions do not stop the vote. They do not stop the certification of the vote, they don’t stop them from being counted.”
