Counties across Portland metro work to keep ballots safe after arsons

Candidates for Washington’s District 3 congressional race are denouncing the arson of potentially hundreds of ballots in their community.
“People who voted all different ways in this election had their ballots burned last night, this is not about partisanship, this is about our values as a nation,” said Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.
“I was disgusted that anybody would attack our democratic process. I was glad to hear though that nobody was hurt in that,” said Joe Kent, Republican candidate for the district seat.
The Clark County Auditor’s Office released a statement reading in part:
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office will increase patrols around ballot drop box locations in the unincorporated area of Clark County as calls for service allow. The Vancouver Police Department also will have increased patrols around ballot boxes in the City of Vancouver as calls for service allow.
Clark County, as part of increased security measures, is hiring people to keep an eye on ballot boxes – and they’re offering $23 an hour.
Other counties across the metro area also have their guard up to make sure nothing like this happens again.
