On Monday afternoon, a waterspout and parent funnel cloud were spotted near Longview, Washington.
KATU viewer Kirsten Amrine shot a video of the funnel cloud rotating above Longview around 2:30 p.m.
Doppler radar imagery shows a strong shower moving through the area. Velocity data shows a very small couplet or area of rotation near where the funnel cloud was spotted.
Photos and videos posted on social media show the rotation reaching the Columbia River, making it a waterspout.
The National Weather Service Portland office issued a Public Information Statement around 4:38 p.m. Part of the statement says “Cold air funnels are common in the Spring and Fall as seasons are changing and there is some wind shear in the atmosphere. This shear can be the wind changing direction and or speed as you go from the surface into the lower levels of the atmosphere.”
