Oregon Governor Tina Kotek discusses the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump

On Sunday morning, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek spoke about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

“First of all, violence in a political setting is completely unacceptable, that is not who we are as Americans, and we should all frankly be sad this morning that that happened in our country. I’m thankful that former President Trump is recovering,” Kotek said. “I’m incredibly sad that folks have been critically injured and have died because of this incident, and we as Americans should know that this is not what our democracy is about, and we have to come together and say no to this type of violence. It’s not acceptable, it’s not acceptable in our country and it actually undermines our democracy, and it has to stop.”

The governor attended a press event along I-84 while the freeway was closed to allow city and state crews to clean up trash and graffiti.

“I know that every day we are always monitoring for security concerns. I have faith that, for most people, they understand that public service is something they need to support and to support and respect their elected officials. I have a lot of faith in Oregonians, I traveled to every corner of this state last year, and I encountered nothing but genuine friendliness and people wanting to say, “We have to work together,” and that’s what I’m going to focus on. But let’s not forget, it is a fragile state, democracy is something we all need to support,” Kotek added. “We all have to say no to violence. We need to have free and fair elections that focus on the issues, and not violence. Yesterday was a very sad day for our country, and I hope we are going to learn from it and not see it happen again.”

Governor Kotek issued a statement Saturday posted on X (formerly Twitter), shortly after the former President was shot in Pennsylvania.
