Portland Public Schools board members split on extent of cellphone ban policy
2 min read
Portland Public Schools board members agree they must create a new district-wide policy banning cellphone use during class, but some are split on how far the new rule should go.
On Monday, board members acting as the PPS policy committee reviewedthe results of a recent student survey, and reconsidered a draft cellphone ban policy. The draft included a district-wide "off and away" policy, which trusts students to stay off their devices during class or face disciplinary actions. Principals at each school would be able to add additional restrictions on their own, under the draft policy.
Three board members advocated for a more restrictive district-wide policy.
