YVYV: ‘The Race for Portland Mayor Debate 2024’

Portland’s 111-year-old city government is coming to an end. In its place, what Portlanders hope will be a new and improved form of government.
The changes include new roles for the mayor and the twelve new city councilors.
Under the new government, the mayor will:
No longer be a member of the city council.
Propose policy but not vote on it.
Hire the city administrator, city attorney, and chief of police.
19 candidates are running for the job.
This past week, KATU and Willamette University, this show’s sponsor, hosted ‘The Race for Portland Mayor Debate 2024."
Five candidates, who met our criteria, took part. Three are members of the current Portland City Council.
Rene Gonzalez – Public Safety Commissioner who oversees Portland Fire Bureau, the Bureau of Emergency Communications, and the Bureau of Emergency Management.
Mingus Mapps – Commissioner of the Portland Bureau of Transportation, Water Bureau, and Environmental Services.
Carmen Rubio – Commissioner for the Housing Bureau, Planning and Sustainability, Permitting and Development, and Prosper Portland.
Liv Osthus – an activist, writer, and musician living and working in Portland.
Keith Wilson – CEO of a local trucking company and founder of a nonprofit called ‘Shelter Portland.’
