Swastikas found at Portland preschool prompt police investigation

Portland police are investigating after reports of swastikas being painted on a Laurelhurst Park preschool on Monday.

According to a Portland Police Bureau spokesperson, “the Major Crimes Unit was notified of this event Monday, assigned the case, and took steps to ensure follow-up was conducted, including canvassing at the park Monday evening.”

Since the incident, the Nazi symbols have since been covered up, but no arrests have been made in the case.

“When I heard about it, my partner and I had a conversation with our kids. We walk in the park and we see things and we can’t really shield them from it,” parent Sonia Ruiz said about the symbols. “When we do see it, they ask questions, or we might point something out. We start talking about it and tell them, try to tell them what’s going on and why it’s important that we talk about it and what things we can do to notice and prevent those types of things.”

According to the Anti-Defamation League, there have been more than 10,000 Antisemitic reported incidents in the United States since October 2023. The civil rights organization also says this is the highest number of recorded incidents in just a one-year period.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day says they are keeping a close on the bias crimes in the area.

“We’re regularly making an emphasis on the challenges that we face around these events, particularly when they’re targeted in such a way that they identify a particular group, whether that be by race or gender or religion or whatever it might be,” said Portland Police Chief Bob Day.
