Revival of Portland landmark: New music venues to replace old Greek Cuisina

If you’ve lived in Portland since the early 2000’s you’ll likely remember a former popular hot spot, The Greek Cuisina. The giant purple inflatable octopus spilling over the awning at SW Fourth and Washington was a landmark for thirty-six years.

It shut down in 2010 after the owners were hit with a list of code violations.

The once thriving corner has been dormant across the street from what became known as an open-air drug market.

But the sweet sound of music and people is about to fill the space once again.

Chris Pheifer, a native Portlander and head of 404 Entertainment, recently reopened the 1905 Jazz Club and signed onto this project to revive the old Greek Cuisina space in 2021.
The project is finally coming to fruition. He’s transforming two floors, one a speakeasy vibe jazz club, and the other a concert venue that can fit up to 300 people.

He says it’s his goal to hopefully open within the next year and probably start with the jazz space in the basement first and then move up to the main floor shortly thereafter.

Although he plans to start with two venues, he’s hoping to take over the next few floors. Pheifer says “The idea is to create a music block that might kind of feel like how Nashville does where they go vertical with a lot of their stuff and create a space that somebody can come see a jazz show and a rock show.

The building has been completely remodeled from the inside, including seismic, electrical, and support beams.

Pheifer believes that activating more spaces downtown will encourage more people to visit whether it’s for nighttime entertainment or a daytime event.

Opening day is expected in late spring of 2025.
