Report: Oregon lacks response to domestic violence, groups are working to help those affected

More needs to be done to address domestic violence in Oregon, according to a 2023 report that details the death toll from the issue.
This issue caught the attention of Oregon’s Secretary of State. A study found more than 500 people have died from domestic violence incidents since 2009.
The study also found over a third of adults in Oregon experience domestic violence in their lifetime. The numbers highlight barriers victims and survivors face when trying to access services.
According to the audit published last year, many have issues navigating the justice system.
Clackamas Women’s Services said the issue doesn’t always have to involve physical abuse.
"Maybe there’s emotional abuse or financial abuse, spiritual abuse. We see impacts related to social media and technology in terms of abuse tactics being utilized through social media and cell phones and things like that,” Catherine Koch, Counseling & Youth Program manager at CWS said.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month giving people a unique opportunity to help support services.
