“Miss Piggy” goes for a bumpy ride as NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters fly into the eye of Hurricane Milton
2 min read
Hurricane Hunters were seen being thrown around by Milton as they flew through the massive Category 4 storm barreling towards Florida Tuesday.
A crew with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) posted the video online of them flying "Miss Piggy", one of NOAA’s two Lockheed WP-3D four-engine turboprop aircraft.
The video shows the crew dealing with severe turbulence as they collect the data neededto help improve the forecast and support hurricane research.
The planes are flown and crewed by members of the NOAA Commissioned Officers Corp. and scientists on board use instruments that transmit wind speed, temperature, pressure, humidity and other forecasting data points, according to NOAA.
By Tuesday afternoon, Hurricane Milton had been downgraded to a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph but its massive size is still capable of causing catastrophic damage to the west coast of Florida.
"A large area of destructive storm surge, with highest inundations of 10 feet or greater, is expected along a portion of the west-central coast of the Florida Peninsula," NOAA reported.
Milton is expected to make landfall on Florida’s central Gulf coast Wednesday night, according to forecasters. Although it will likely fluctuate in intensity, it will remain "an extremely dangerous hurricane" through landfall.
