Family demands US-led probe after UW grad killed by Israeli forces in West Bank

The family of activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi is speaking out for the first time since she was killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces back in September.
Eygi, a 26-year-old University of Washington graduate, wasattending a weekly demonstration against Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank when she was shot by Israeli soldiers according to witnesses.
Ozden Bennett, Aysenur’s older sister, says her sister’s autopsy shows she was killed by a bullet to the head. The autopsy report says Eygi was “injured by a fire projectile penetrating” into her skull.
The White House said in a statement that it was “deeply disturbed” by the killing of a U.S. citizen. Officials in Israel conducted their own investigation into Eygi’s death. According to the AP, the Israeli military said "it was looking into reports that troops had killed a foreign national while firing at an ‘instigator of violent activity’ in the area of the protest."
Eygi ‘s husband Hamid says he spoke to her the night before she was killed and the two talked about her plans for the next morning. "We were talking about the demonstration, that her plan was to go. We talked about the risk. She assured me that it was totally her intention to stay away from any kind of action that might happen."
Now, Eygi’s family is calling for the United States to launch its own investigation into her killing.
"This … comes back to our calls for demanding a U.S. led investigation into the killing, because an Israeli investigation alone is not adequate, especially given the longstanding history of Israel rarely ever taking accountability for similar crimes that they’ve committed," Bennett said in an exclusive interview with ABC News.
Beyond the international complications, the family is now left to mourn the violent loss of a bring and beloved young woman.
Older sister Bennett is still trying to come to terms with the world-shattering change.
"It was world-stopping when he described how she was killed," she said. "I just know what my husband has told me about my reaction. It was an out-of-body experience. It was."
"The violence in which she was killed. That’s one of the hardest parts about it to process."
Eygi’s death comes amid violence in the West Bank since the Israel-Hamas war began one year ago on October 7.
