Major Crimes Team investigates officer-involved shooting in Milwaukie

2 min read

The Clackamas County Major Crimes Unit is investigating an early-morning officer-involved shooting in Milwaukie.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Monday morning at a shopping center on Southeast Oak Street.

Brian Buyck, an employee at a nearby Shari’s, was serving three customers when he heard the sound of gunfire.

“All I hear was like, I think it was like 6,7, or 8 shots but they were consecutive,” he said. "It was like pow pow pow pow pow pow!”

Not long after, Buyck says he answered a phone call from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, advising him to lock the doors of the restaurant, and encourage customers to stay inside until police left the scene.

“It wasn’t until after I heard the shots that I seen [sic] a lot more cop cars come afterward,” he said.

According to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s office, two Milwaukie police officers were conducting a traffic stop for a driver with a suspended license at 11000 Southeast Oak Street.

During the stop, the DA’s office said both officers fired their pistols, striking the driver. They then gave the driver first aid and he was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been provided, but both officers are on paid administrative leave while their use of force is investigated.

Bart Stickney, who comes to the shopping center almost every day for lunch, said he’s never seen any crime happen here.

“Not even close, not even close,” he said. “This is as ordinary and safe as I would imagine anywhere.”

When asked what was going through his mind, Buyck said he was thinking about God and trying to stay calm.

“In a situation like that, what really can you do? If you’re stuck in a building and something happens, nothing really can save you,” he said.

The driver’s identity has not been released and neither officer was injured during the incident.

The Clackamas Interagency Major Crimes Team and Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the officer’s use of force.
