David Douglas football staff call for action after racial slurs are directed at team during games

3 min read

David Douglas football staff are demanding change after multiple incidents have been reported involving racial slurs against players and coaches.

According to the Forest Grove Police Department, police have taken a description of an individual and vehicle involved in a racial incident during a recent football game at Forest Grove High School. According to FGPD, officers are still working to locate the vehicle and identify the person involved.

Adrienne C. Nelson High School Principal Greg Harris also told KATU his administration is looking into similar events during a Thursday night junior varsity football game. According to Harris, “a David Douglas athlete reported hearing the n-word used on the field. The game was paused, with officials addressing coaches and coaches then addressing players, but the officials were unable to determine where the language originated.”

During the game, no player was disqualified from playing and Harris says the coaching staff emphasized to players there is “absolutely no tolerance for hate speech.”

Volunteer coach for the team, Marcell Fraizer, tells KATU these kinds of incidents have happened at multiple games. “If the N-word is said, whether you’re white, black, Latino, Hispanic, Ukrainian, if the N-word is said, it’s an automatic ejection from that player,” he explained about a game against Rex Putnam High School. But he says, no one was ejected from the game.

“We warned our team, going into Friday it could get significant. This is where the craziness starts to happen. At halftime, we get a report that people are launching items, food items into our crowd,” he said.

On Monday evening, Peter Weber, Executive Director of the OSAA sent a statement to KATU News saying they were also investigating the incident.

"We became aware of the alleged incidents over the weekend. We’ve been in contact with administrators from all involved schools and school districts since then as they work together to investigate what took place and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. These types of behaviors are unacceptable and simply have no place in high school sports; they will not be tolerated. The OSAA remains committed to working alongside member schools in creating a safe and welcoming environment for all at interscholastic events."
