Oregonians deployed to help Florida, Georgia, & North Carolina recover from Helene

2 min read

Helene came pounding on Florida’s big bend as a Category 4, Thursday packing 140-mile-an-hour winds.

It quickly moved north as it downgraded in size, but it caused a lot of damage.

At least 59 people are dead including a mom and her two infant sons. Millions are without power and the flooding is catastrophic.

In North Carolina, tornadoes flattened homes.

"Everything was spinning inside the room. Bricks, everything was going around in circles. We just all grabbed went under the tables,” Sonny Cardinale told ABC affiliate WTVD.

In the Raleigh suburb of Rocky Mount, a medical supply business was demolished into a pile of bricks.

"All I could hear was help! Help! She was covered in bricks. The only thing I could do at that point is call 911,” Keisha Justice said.

Meanwhile, over 500 Red Cross volunteers have been deployed across several states dealing with Helene’s aftermath.

"At one point, Madison County had a 100% power outage. So, working with folks there,” Jonathan Seibert with Red Cross Cascades told KATU.

More than 10 Oregonians with Red Cross Cascades flew to the region including Seibert.

“I’m here in Florida. We have some volunteers in North Carolina, we have some that are in Georgia. We have a few different areas, absolutely,” he said.

Crews were anticipating helping with shelter needs, but as the situation changed rapidly, they began providing emergency supplies like food and water.

"As you get further out, you see downed trees. You see some trees through some homes. I did help with some water to some folks who said a tree went right through their roof, which is of course devastating,” Seibert added.

As the water receded and conditions improved, he said there were still more challenges.

With all these different disruptions to roads and services and all those things, it does create a shortage of blood because all those drives are being canceled,” Seibert said.
