Oregon DMV error mistakenly registered 1,200+ possible noncitizens, state reveals

An updated audit of Oregon’s Department of Motor Vehicles found the agency mistakenly registered 1,259 possible noncitizens through the state’s Motor Voter Act.

Two weeks ago, the secretary of state announced that 306 individuals who were not eligible to vote were wrongly registered through the state law, which automatically registers eligible voters when they renew their driver’s licenses. The number ballooned to over 1,200 after the DMV reviewed over a million records after it discovered the issue.

“Because of this quick response, I can assure Oregonians that the 2024 General Election will not be affected by this error in any way,” said Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade.

Jeff Helfrich, the Republican House Leader, said on Monday that "Oregonians deserve full transparency about how this happened."

House Republicans will introduce legislation in the 2025 legislative session "to safeguard our elections," according to a news release.

Griffin-Valade’s office said the error occurred, at least in part, because DMV employees incorrectly entered data when individuals used non-U.S. documents, like a foreign passport or birth certificate, when registering for or renewing a driver’s license. The DMV, according to Griffin-Valade, mistakenly indicated that the documents used were American-made, which triggered the state Motor Voter Act.
