Oregon’s U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden was a force in helping get a WNBA team in Portland.
The official announcement that a professional women’s basketball team would start playing in Portland in 2026 was made by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert on Wednesday at the Moda Center.
In the early 2000s, Portland did have a WNBA team, but the Portland Fire fizzled after just three seasons because of low ticket sales.
In this interview, Wyden said things are different now.
