Trump Assassination Attempt: Martin County Sheriff’s Office has a suspect in custody

Former President Donald Trump is safe after gunfire Sunday near where he was golfing in Florida.

The Associated Press reported that Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a gun near Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach.

The person fled in an SUV and was later apprehended in a nearby county by local law enforcement, the AP reported.

The AP cited law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity about an ongoing investigation.

CNN reported that a long gun was recovered. Citing unnamed sources briefed on the matter, CNN reported that officials believe an armed person intended to target Trump.

The suspect had an AK-style rifle, the AP reported.

The FBI says it is investigating "what appears to be an attempted assassination," the AP reported.

No injuries were reported.

Agents were a few holes ahead of him when they noticed the person with the firearm, according to the AP.

Trump campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung issued a statement, saying Trump was "safe following gunshots in his vicinity.”

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said his agency and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, which he said took place shortly before 2 p.m.
