Orphaned otter pups found sick and dying in ditch rehabilitated in Oregon
2 min read
Two orphaned baby river otters are getting a second chance at life in Central Oregon after they were found stranded in a ditch last week.
Think Wild, a wildlife hospital in Bend, says an Oregon State Park ranger found 3 otter pups abandoned in a roadside ditch at Cove Palisades State Park on June 26.
The pups were sick and very lethargic, and unfortunately one passed away shortly after they were found. The ranger got in contact with an Oregon State Police Wildlife Officer, who took the two surviving pups to Think Wild to be treated and rehabilitated.
These are the first river otters to receive care from Think Wild since the wildlife hospital’s opening in 2020, the organization says.
Think Wild says the two surviving pups, both female, were dehydrated and dirty. Staff gave the pups fluids and antiparasitics, and determined they were 5-6 weeks old.
