Neighbor accused of killing Beaverton nurse makes first in-person court appearance

Bryce Schubert, who has been charged with the murder of Melissa Jubane, appeared in a Washington County courtroom alongside his attorney, Greg Scholl, Tuesday morning where a judge was appointed to the case.

Neither Schubert nor Scholl spoke in court. Several people who appear to be linked to Schubert watched him exit the courtroom in an orange prison jumpsuit and handcuffs, escorted by police. One woman was in tears.

KATU has tried to reach Scholl, and members of Schubert’s family for comment, but those attempts were unsuccessful. According to court documents, Schubert’s parents live in Newberg. KATU canvassed the neighborhood and one neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said nothing seemed off about the family.

Schubert has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and second-degree abuse of a corpse after Beaverton Police linked him to the death of his neighbor and a Beaverton nurse, Melissa Jubane.

Jubane was reported missing when she didn’t show up for work at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center on September 4th. Three days later, Beaverton Police said her remains had been found and Schubert was arrested and charged with her murder.

Beaverton Police did not provide information on where her remains were found, or if the two knew each other. Subsequently, the court document describing probable cause which may contain those details, has been sealed by a judge. An available court document said investigators believe Schubert kidnapped and killed Jubane "on or about September 4th," the same day she did not show up to work.

A spokesperson for Providence said that Schubert was employed as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from 2022 to 2023, but he has never been employed at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, where Jubane worked.

Schubert is being held without bail due to the murder charge. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary probable cause hearing on September 16th.
