Hundreds gather to remember Melissa Jubane, court docs ordered sealed

A large crowd gathered at Ridgewood View Park on Monday evening to honor the memory of Melissa Jubane, the 32-year-old Beaverton nurse who police say was killed last week.

Friends, coworkers, members of the local medical community, and others piled flowers in front of a photo of Jubane.

According to a fellow nurse who worked with Jubane at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, she got married just over a week before she was reported missing on Sept. 4. Beaverton police announced the discovery of her body on Sept. 7.

"She was the kind of nurse that you get to the unit to start your shift and you’d see she’s on the schedule, and you’d just exhale and be like, ‘We’re going to be okay,’" said Olivia Fults. "She had a lot of life left to live."

Hours before the vigil, Jubane’s alleged killer appeared in court for the first time.

Bryce Schubert, 27, lived in the same apartment building as Jubane, according to Beaverton police. He has not yet entered a plea on three charges: second-degree murder, kidnapping, and second-degree abuse of a corpse. Schubert is set to be back in court on Tuesday morning and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 16.

The probable cause affidavit, in which law enforcement officers justify their arrest of a suspect, was filed under seal Monday at the request of Washington County prosecutors.

On Saturday, when it announced Schubert’s arrest, the Beaverton Police Department acknowledged the "significant community interest and concern" in Jubane’s death with a warning that information will not be released immediately.
