NTSB gives an update on the Fairview, Oregon plane crash

2 min read

The National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies will be holding a press conference late Monday morning to provide details on the Fairview plane crash that killed three people over the weekend.

The NTSB will be joined by Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell, Gresham Fire Department Chief Scott Lewis, and Fairview Mayor Keith Kudrna to provide the updates at 11 a.m.

Just about 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, a twin-engine Cessna 421C crashed into a residential neighborhood in Fairview. The Cessna was attempting to land at the Troutdale Airport. Audio recordings from LIVEATC.net indicate the plane was having control issues.

“At some point during the crash, it hit a power pole or tower, causing it to fall over. The aircraft crashed into a building of townhomes and that structure also caught fire,” said Deputy John Plock with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

MCSO deputies responding to the scene helped evacuate homes while emergency services arrived on the scene to help put out the fire and begin investigating the crash.

Officials said early Saturday afternoon that two people were onboard the aircraft, and one person was still missing from the townhomes.

At 5 p.m., Gresham Fire told KATU News they had found three people dead.

Prior to the Tuesday press conference, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office stated they have received multiple inquiries about the identities of the deceased, but names will not be released until the Medical Examiner’s Office positively identifies the bodies. The identities will be released to the public once next of kin are identified.

During the conference, the NTSB said the crash occurred during a routine maintenance flight of the aircraft. The full investigation could take up to 18 months, the agency added.
