Portland Police shares details on enforcement of new drug law starting September 1

Portland Police Chief Bob Day announced the actions police officers will take starting Sept 1, when Oregon’s law re-criminalizing small amounts of hard drugs takes effect.
The law, passed by the Oregon Legislature and signed by the governor in the first part of 2024, repeals the Class E violation that previously applied to possessing a small amount of a controlled substance and replaces it with a misdemeanor crime of unlawful possession. It also allows violators to enter into a deflection program run by counties, where they can avoid jail.
