New state law now gives #TriMet the teeth to cite for drug possession

1 min read

#TriMet has been trying to reduce drug use and increase ridership on its trains and buses for the last several years, but it will soon have more enforceability power from two state laws that will soon take effect.

House Bill 4002 will re-criminalize possessing small amounts of hard drugs, giving police back the power to arrest people and send them to jail.

Starting Sept. 1, police, including TriMet Transit Police, will be able to cite people for drug possession, an offense punishable by up to 180 days in jail.
