Preschool near planned drug deflection center files lawsuit against county and officials

A preschool near Multnomah County’s planned drug deflection center has filed a lawsuit against the county and some of its top elected officials to comply with Oregon’s public meetings law.

Escuela Viva Community School threatened a lawsuit two weeks agoif the county didn’t scrap the plan to open a deflection center at 900 S.E. Sandy Blvd, citing safety concerns and display over the “closed door” manner the deflection center plan was hatched.

The county has pushed back the center’s opening to October of this yearto allow for more community engagement and to meet staffing level and training goals. The center was originally scheduled to open on September 1.

The lawsuit filed Monday alleges that the county and officials who comprised the Leadership Team that came up with the deflection center plan did so in a series of confidential meetings that were not in accordance with Oregon’s Public Meetings Law.

Named along with the county in the lawsuit are Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, and Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrissey O’Donnell.

We reached out to the county, the sheriff’s office, and the district attorney’s office for comment, but all declined our request.

The lawyer representing the school says they could ask for a court order to block the center’s opening in October if his clients feel the county’s plan to operate the center has not improved to their satisfaction.
