Man charged with sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl at Mt. Tabor Park

A man is charged with sex abuse after prosecutors say he groped a 12-year-old girl at Mt. Tabor Park on August 16, while the girl was walking with her mother.

Court documents say the man lunged at the girl, grabbing her with one hand, and touched her with the other.

She was able to break free and her mother confronted the man while recording him on her cell phone.

According to the documents the man then began to taunt the mother saying "You’re just trying to be famous."

The mother yelled for nearby people to call 9-1-1 and witnesses followed the man through the park until police arrived.

Officers arrested Fernando Garces.

Neighbors tell KATU News they were surprised something like that happened in the park. "It’s always felt very safe to me. I have not really seen anything that was concerning. In fact, I’m always kind of amazed because some other parks have some more maybe uncomfortable looking situations and it always just feels very safe to me," said Julie Strange.

Prosecutors asked Garces be held in jail. A Multnomah County judge set bail at $125,000.

He was ordered to have no contact with minors,to wear a GPS monitor, and not to go within 500 feet of parks, schools, or other places where kids might be.
