Traffic tickets and warnings from police way up in Portland as deaths remain high

The number of traffic tickets and warnings written by Portland police officers nearly doubled in the first full year the bureau’s traffic unit was back, compared to the last full year without it, a KATU investigation found.
Despite the efforts, deadly crashes remain nearly on pace with last year’s total – which ended at a three-decade high. However, the man in charge of the traffic unit said there’s more to determining the unit’s success than just looking at the number of deaths.
