WATCH: Providence Park becomes concert venue. Foo Fighters play Portland on Friday

Providence Park will host a concert on Friday for the first time in nearly two decades.

Crews are in the process of transforming the venue from a soccer field to a concert venue.

On Friday, Aug. 16, the venue will host the Food Fighters for their “Everything or Nothing At All” tour.

Including floor seating, the stadium will hold approximately 30,000 people. This makes Providence Park nearly double the next largest venue in Oregon.

“This really gives us an opportunity to attract some of those shows that wouldn’t have come to Portland in the past,” Heather Davis, CEO of the Portland Timbers in Providence Park said during an interview with KATU.

Davis also says a lot of planning has also gone into keeping concertgoers safe, and says there are a lot of partnerships to make it work. “We obviously have robust security plans here at the stadium, but the city has also been really helpful in helping us create a concert-specific security protocol and in working on safety and security in the neighborhood,” she explained.

The stadium hosted its first-ever concert back in 1957 with Elvis Presley, where 14,600 people witnessed one of the first-ever outdoor stadium rock concerts in music history.

Green Day and special guests The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas for The Saviors Tour are also expected to perform on Sept. 25. Gates open on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and the concert starts at 5:30 p.m. Concertgoers are reminded that there is a clear bag policy.
