Rides on Portland’s E-Scooters will cost less for low-income residents

2 min read

Electric scooters and bikes are becoming more affordable. If there is any city in America that values itself on being green, you know that is Portland.

Now, there is an effort to ramp that up. "Today, we mark a new era for transportation in Portland,” said Priya Dhanapal, with Portland Public Works as she and other leaders announced a contract with Lime, and Nike with Lyft. They are bringing over 3,500 e-scooters to rent citywide.

"I love it. I love seeing all of this. I love seeing people on bikes. I love seeing people on scooters,” Albina Neighborhood resident Anisa Sheppherd-Beck said.

The Nike/Lyft e-scooters are a game changer. It has a cellphone charger and new safety components like turn signals, but the longer you ride them, the more expensive it can get. Some of these companies are trying to make it more affordable for those on programs like Snap and W.I.C.

It can slash the rider’s regular price. For Lime, it would cost 50 cents to unlock and seven cents per minute to ride.

As for Lyft or Nike e-scooters, the discount would cost you $5/month.

It is free to unlock and seven cents per minute to ride. The effort is making some locals excited.

"See, there is no excuse not to be on a bike then, or a scooter. You can go uphill or downhill,” Sheppherd-Beck said.

Meanwhile, PBOT has plans to offer rebates to make purchasing a bike more affordable.

Portland city leaders have expressed full support and the program could begin some time next year.

In the meantime, you will have to apply to rent e-scooters at an affordable price.
